New Satellite is up and running!

The satellite that carried New Zealand free-to-air TV transmissions is retiring in May. To keep providing free satellite TV, we've moved to a replacement satellite. At the same time, the satellite TV network has been upgraded to be more robust and ready for future enhancements.

This won't matter to you if you use a UHF aerial or the Freeview Streaming TV app to watch TV. And this update is expected to be seamless for most who tune in through a satellite dish.

However, as we've recommended over the previous months, older satellite boxes should be replaced to keep watching free satellite TV.

If you're tuned in through a satellite dish and experience any unexpected issues, follow the simple steps below to help put things right.

Models that will no longer work!

As of 15th April 2025 the following models will no longer work with the new satellite.
S7070r, S7070, S7080, S9020DVD, S7010PVR, S7000, S7010

These models won’t pick up channels anymore and will need to be replaced.

What To Do

While satellite boxes would've picked up this satellite TV update automatically, follow the steps below if yours appear to be misbehaving.

Are you tuned in through a satellite dish?

It can be a bit confusing to know how you're actually getting Live TV - it's the last thing we think about when we're enjoying our shows. But it's important to know how you're tuned in, so you can find the right tips for resolving any problems.

Check here to see if you're tuned in through a satellite dish.

If you're using a UHF aerial or the Freeview Streaming TV app and looking for support, head here. Please ignore the rest of this page because the satellite TV update has no effect on your TV viewing experience whatsoever.

If you are using a satellite dish, read on.

Do you need a new box?

If you've lost ALL channels, check if you need to upgrade your satellite box.

Most satellite boxes will continue working after this update; however, some satellite boxes have lasted many years and run on outdated technology which won't work with the transmission from the new satellite. There aren't many of these older boxes left - if you have one, it's time to upgrade.

Channel surf

If your satellite box has lost a couple of channels, move through your entire channels list from TVNZ 1 to TVNZ 2, to Three..., all the way to the very last channel then back to TVNZ 1. Just as if you're channel surfing.

This can refresh the channels list on your TV or box and help pick up any channels dropped accidentally.

Retune or Reset Your Satellite Box

Still having trouble? Give your satellite box a cold retune.

A cold retune will help most satellite boxes correctly pick up the latest satellite TV service or any updates it had previously missed. But it won't help if you have an older satellite box, check to see if it's time for an upgrade.

Instructions for Cold Retune (Called Factory Reset on most of our models) can be found in your user manual or here

Satellite TV reception playing up?

The new satellite should mean clearer, more reliable reception for most viewers. But if your satellite dish is not in good working order or you're in one of a few remote areas, you might notice issues. Learn more here.

Reception issues typically appear as pixelated or scrambled video, or you may get no signal on some channels or all channels (Lost all channels? Check if you need a new box). In some cases, reception may be worse on rainy days or at certain times of the day.

If this is what you're experiencing and you've tried steps 1-4 to no avail, please let us know.

Got questions?

The satellite that currently transmits free-to-air TV broadcasts is retiring in 2025, so we need to transition to a different satellite in order to ensure Freeview continues to be available via satellite.

If you tune into Freeview through a satellite dish:

Check to see if you can get Al Jazeera on channel 20. If you can't, you will need to replace your box.

Check if you're getting Sky and Freeview from a single satellite dish.
Then sign up to receive updates. When key details are finalised, we'll let you know if you need to do anything.
Note: you won't need to adjust your satellite dish if it's used solely to access Freeview.

If you get Freeview through a UHF aerial or our Freeview Streaming TV app: you won't need to do anything at all.

If you can't watch Al Jazeera on channel 20, your satellite box is too old and needs to be replaced.

You can choose from a range of replacement options.

Where there’s good internet: stream Live TV channels with the Freeview Streaming TV app, it's free to download on most Smart TVs and preloaded onto SmartVU dongles. eden+1 and Bravo+1 will be added to Freeview Streaming TV following the January 21st channel changes.

If you prefer a ‘like for like’ setup, you can get a new satellite box.

Pick up your new satellite box, SmartVU dongle from trusted electronics retailers nationwide.

Some satellite boxes last a long time! There are still a small number of older satellite boxes in use today that run on an older, legacy broadcast standard.

As part of the satellite transition, the way channels are being broadcast need to change. This will first take place on 21 January first for Sky Open, eden+1 and Bravo+1, with remaining channels to follow when the current satellite is replaced.

Unfortunately, older satellite boxes are not compatible with this new broadcast method. Al Jazeera already uses this new method, so if you can't watch Al Jazeera on channel 20, or if you lose Sky Open, eden+1 and Bravo+1 after Jan 21st, you need to replace your box.

Upgrading your satellite box now is also crucial to future proof your TV setup to ensure you can keep watching all your favourite channels for years to come.

If you're using your satellite dish just for Freeview, you most likely wouldn't need to adjust it to keep watching Live TV after the satellite transition.

This satellite change is only relevant to you if you're tuned into Freeview through a satellite dish.

It's not always easy to tell how you might be tuning in. Here's a super easy way: check your channels!

If you’re tuned in through a satellite dish, you should have George FM on channel 70.
If you’re tuned in through a UHF aerial, you should have CH200 on channel 200.
And if you stream using the Freeview Streaming TV App, you would have Juice TV on channel 38.

Depending on the final form of the satellite solution (to be confirmed in early 2025), you may need to make some changes to your setup. As we get more details, we'll share advice on what you may need to do to keep watching Freeview, if anything at all.

The best thing to do is to sign up for updates and select 'I have both Freeview and Sky' so we can keep you informed.

We're subscription-free, which means you don't need an account to watch Freeview. That makes it super easy to enjoy your favourite channels and shows. But it also means we don't have any contact details for you and can't reach out to keep you informed about this satellite update.

So, if you're tuned in to Freeview through a satellite dish, the best thing to do is to signup for updates, so we can keep you in the loop when we have full details about the final satellite solution.

Let us know if you have questions we haven't covered yet and we'll do our best to hunt down an answer for you.

If your satellite reception cuts out around the same time each day, it’s very likely your satellite dish is misaligned or damaged. This can happen over time due to several reasons such as strong winds, bad weather or general exposure to the elements.

Why does alignment matter?

Proper alignment of your satellite dish ensures you don’t lose signal throughout the day. If your dish is not aligned correctly, you will eventually experience degraded service. This is expected behaviour with a misaligned dish and is likely related to the issues you’re currently facing.

Why is this happening now?
The satellite carrying TV transmissions for New Zealand is approaching the end of its life. As a result, misaligned dishes can lose signal at certain times of the day. However, TV reception on correctly aligned satellite dishes would remain unaffected. This highlights the importance of proper alignment.
There is a plan in place to replace the current satellite, and you can learn more here. Please note, however, realigning your satellite dish is recommended for ongoing optimum satellite reception.

Realign your satellite dish to fix this problem.
To fix the issue, contact a professional installer to realign your satellite dish. Currently, realignment can only be performed within a small window at certain times of the day, to sync with the movement of the current satellite. You can check the installer directory here to find a technician near you and get a ballpark of their charges.

What if you can’t realign your satellite dish right now?
You can use the Freeview Streaming TV app to watch your favourite channels where there is reliable internet. Learn how to get the app here.
